Virtual Patient Care is a free online service where patients can speak with experienced registered nurses and get personalized answers to their questions.

In this video by Michael Wong, Founder and Executive Director of the Physician-Patient Alliance for Health & Safety explains what prompted the Physician-Patient Alliance and its cardiovascular partners – American Heart Association, AC Forum, Heart Rhythm Society, StopAfib.org, Mended Hearts, and Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association – to establish a nursing chat line:

“During the current COVID-19 conditions, patients face the burdens of social distancing and increased difficulty in reaching clinicians busy with emergencies. To meet the pressing needs of patients during this COVID pandemic, the Physician-Patient Alliance, with an unrestricted grant from the BMS-Pfizer Alliance, and our cardiovascular partners recently launched a free virtual patient care website and chat line.”

The most asked question on the chat line, which launched April 23, is “Are cardiovascular patients more at risk of getting COVID-19?”

The chat line is a model of collaboration and innovation, said Mr. Wong – “The Virtual Patient Care initiative … brings together pharmaceuticals, health advocates, medical organizations, and even a PR agency. And, it takes that organizational collaboration and marries it with telehealth to help patients get the answers they may need during this time of social distancing during the COVID pandemic.”

You can find the Virtual Patient Care site by going to VirtualPatientCare.org

      My husband went to the ER with pain in his right knee, they X ray and said it was a sprang, to use ice and heat, wrap it and anti-inflammatory meds for the swelling. Today he did exactly that and now he his using the heating pad but his leg ankle and top of foot is very cold to the touch and he said it feels numb of weird. Should he go back to the doctor?

        Taking norco with zoloft and hydroxyzine may result in an adverse drug reaction – “Using HYDROcodone together with sertraline can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called the serotonin syndrome, which may include symptoms such as confusion, hallucinations, seizures, extreme changes in blood pressure, increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, shivering or shaking, blurred vision, muscle spasm or stiffness, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Severe cases may result in coma and even death.” Please consult with your doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms during treatment

      Hello, if your blood pressure goes up and down on and off and even get a blood pressure level of 151/93 should you be taking blood pressure medication even if it goes back and forth between good and semi-good levels? And would this make you high risk for Covid?

      Hi. My daughter aged 20 has experienced something very uncomfortable. She has been struggling with hard stool since Saturday. This morning, she got the urge to go to the toilet, but once there the stool didn’t want to come out. Almost like it’s stuck. From time and time she gets this unpleasant feeling, almost like the stool is moving. What do you advice her?

  3. Brittany

    Hi! So I have a quick question. So first off, i have had a mirena for 5 years and 2 months. It ‘expired’ a few months ago. I read online that it should still work for a year or 2 after the expiration date. I have not had a menstrual cycle in the whole 5 years of having it. All of a sudden it came back last month. Does that mean that the mirena is no longer working??

  4. Katelyn Doe

    my throat hurts very bad and has for almost a week. i have never smoked a full puff bar and only smoked two blunts of weed. i went to the doctor a few days ago because my tonsil was very swollen and my lymph nodes. my throat pain was severe and i could not eat. they said it was drainage. i’ve been taking allegra and a lot of (probably too much) ibuprofen. here and there i feel nausea which makes me think i take too much. my tonsil is now nasty with white lines all over it and bleeds. it’s been over a week almost two weeks this upcoming monday/tuesday. could this be severe like cancer? (i’m 16)

  7. Kristin DeBord

    Approximately 12hrs ago I began to experience nausea, abdominal discomfort & severe R ovarian pain, such as occurs with a large cyst. This is continuing, as I am certain it’s my Endometrios. My question is, when should I call EMS to take me to ER? I feel dehydrated. This is not something I have ever done except 1 time, 5 years ago.

  10. Briana

    If someone could please get back to regarding the problems I am having right now it seems very serious I am not able to visit a hospital or doctor right now I am on the road I don’t have health insurance right now at the moment but me and my husband are looking for a new one I did have before it’s really urgent thank you!

    • Michael Wong

      Here’s an article by Healthline that discusses whether you can be pregnant and have your period:

      “The short answer is no. Despite all of the claims out there, it isn’t possible to have a period while you’re pregnant.

      Rather, you might experience “spotting” during early pregnancy, which is usually light pink or dark brown in color.

      As a rule of thumb, if there’s enough bleeding to fill a pad or tampon, then it’s a sign you’re probably not pregnant. If you’ve had a positive pregnancy test and are bleeding heavily, seek medical care.”

    I’m 17 and I’ve been having this problem for years and the doctors could never figure out what’s wrong so I gave up. But it keeps happening and I wanted to see if you could help. When I run I get this sharp pain in my rest chest and this happen while i’m running then it moves from my right chest to the middle of my chest. While this happens It burns to breathe and It painful to breathe and it hurts everything I breathe. Then after I stop running and I can still feel that pain for 10 to 20 mins after then it goes away. Can you help?

    I’ve had multiple ovarian cysts rupture in a short time frame (6 weeks). I have a family history of reproductive cysts (uterine, fallopian, breast and ovarian) and even cancer. Should I be worried?

    • Michael Wong

      Researchers have found that gabapentin “may cause dizziness, drowsiness, and confusion in some older adults.” Moreover, “Gabapentin-related altered mental status changes, when they occur, frequently do so in the first few weeks of drug initiation.”

    i was around someone who tested positive for covid, but she has no symptoms. her & i both tested negative last monday but she was exposed to it again. I went to get tested the day after she got her positive results. i have no symptoms, just headaches. but i would still sometimes get them even after i tested negative?

    • Michael Wong

      You ask a good question whether you can get COVID even after testing negative. According to the CDC, “Yes, it is possible. You may test negative if the sample was collected early in your infection and test positive later during this illness. You could also be exposed to COVID-19 after the test and get infected then. Even if you test negative, you still should take steps to protect yourself and others.”

  14. Kassandra

    I’m 17 and on birth control – nexapolan implant. I haven’t had a period in 1year and 4 months and there is currently no sign of one. Should I be worried?

    • Michael Wong

      According to NEXPLANON, “The most common side effect of NEXPLANON is a change in your normal menstrual bleeding pattern. In studies, one out of ten women stopped using the implant because of an unfavorable change in their bleeding pattern. Your period may be longer or shorter, or you may have no bleeding at all.” Please consult with your doctor about your concerns and options.

    If I cannot produce a medical record about having chicken pox, as a healthcare worker I am required to either have the vaccine or have proof of immunity (titer). Would it harm me to have the varicella vaccine if I have already had chicken pox? I know I wouldn’t NEED it, but would it HARM me?

    • Michael Wong

      You ask an interesting question, Nick. According to the CDC, “Most of the time, your risk of serious side effects does not increase if you get extra doses of a vaccine. Getting extra doses of oral vaccines, such as rotavirus or typhoid, is not known to cause any problems.”

    Hello guys, so about a year ago I had MRSA and the doctors told me it was gone now I and growing a bump on my arm and it was a white head but I kept popping it and it swelled up and it’s been giving off a lot of liquid including blood. It really hurts and the redness around it keeps getting bigger and bigger. Any suggestions on what I should do?

    • Michael Wong

      Research has found that “As many as 70% of patients with CA-MRSA SSTI will experience recurrent SSTI over one year, even after successful initial treatment.” Please consult with your doctor for treatment options.

        Daughter is 3 years old and has small pimple like white puss filled blisters on her side and in her private regions. I need to know what this is as it is spreading and I’m worried about her health. I have also recently had a break out in certain areas such as my face and my private regions and I don’t know what it is that is causing this. Thanks for any insight.

        • Michael Wong

          Please consult with your doctor to get a diagnosis and treatment for your daughter’s condition.

          If you don’t have a doctor, here are a couple of resources to healthcare providers that may be helpful:

      Becky, you ask a good question. According to the CDC – “Cases of reinfection of COVID-19 have been reported but are rare. In general, reinfection means a person was infected (got sick) once, recovered, and then later became infected again. Based on what we know from similar viruses, some reinfections are expected.”

  17. Jennifer

    I have like a bruise and looks kinda like a big blood blister or vessel or something idk what on my right breast that is on the side that is near my arm and I’m worried what could it be?

    • Michael Wong

      Breast boils are “normal and relatively common. They come about when a hair follicle or sweat gland becomes infected. They occur in places where sweat can pool such as your underarms, groin, and facial area.” Although breast boils are uncomfortable, as a Medical News Today article points out –

      If at-home treatment of a breast boil does not reduce its symptoms and appearance after 2 weeks, medical assistance is advisable.

      If a boil becomes larger and more severe, it is best to speak to a doctor. A person will also require medical attention if:

      they have a fever and feel generally unwell
      red streaks appear around the boil
      the boil does not drain
      additional boils appear
      the boil keeps recurring after initially healing

      A doctor may investigate the cause of recurring or severe boils using a blood test or skin swab.

    I have been experiencing dull, constant pain on the right side of my neck from top to bottom. This is constant, and I can feel it all the time when I swaIlow. I have also woken up a few times and felt like there was something stuck in the right side of my throat but nothing would come out. I had gotten a full lab panel and my cholesterol is high. I can’t help but wonder if this has to do with coronary artery disease? I had a CT for something else (LPR that I’m taking medicine for) and the doctor said it was “fine” but I can’t make sense of it any other way? No thyroid levels are off either.

        • Michael Wong

          This Mayo Clinic article has a good discussion of causes and treatments for neck pain and recommends seeing a doctor if you have neck pain that:

          Worsens in spite of self-care
          Persists after several weeks of self-care
          Radiates down your arms or legs
          Is accompanied by headache, numbness or tingling

  19. Ayrial

    I’m 18 years old and I’m currently pregnant. I was lying here and all the sudden a stabbing sensation came on in my upper left side underneath my breast and under the armpit. It was hurting so bad I could not move I was just in pain and screaming. I was not sure if this is something that should seek medical attention

    • Michael Wong

      Chest pain during pregnancy – “Stress, a cold, asthma, and other common conditions can lead to chest pain when you’re pregnant. The added weight of your new baby, changing body, and shifting organs can also cause chest pain. In rare cases, chest pain and other symptoms may be a sign of a more serious health condition … See your doctor immediately if you have chest pain that doesn’t go away, is severe, or if you have other symptoms that happen even when you’re resting or lying down. Some pregnant women can get high blood pressure and other conditions that may affect the heart. Get urgent medical attention if you have:

      severe shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
      sudden breathlessness
      chest pain that worsens when coughing
      excessive nausea and vomiting
      heart palpitations
      a racing heart rate
      headache pain
      blurred vision
      dizziness
      fainting
      dark urine or peeing less than usual
      leg or ankle swelling
      leg or ankle swelling on one side only
      swelling of the face or anywhere in your body
      calf muscle pain or leg pain

  20. Julianna

    My friends right side has been hurting but she doesn’t have any symptoms of it being her apendex. So why does her right side hurt?

    • Michael Wong

      This article by Healthline discusses the causes of pain in the lower right abdomen – “The lower right part of your abdomen is home to part of your colon and, for some women, the right ovary. There are many conditions that can cause you to feel mild to severe discomfort in your right abdominal region. More often than not, pain in the lower right abdomen is nothing to worry about and will go away on its own in a day or two.”

      As the article recommends, please seek medical attention if any of the following symptoms are experienced:
      – pain or pressure in your chest
      – fever
      – bloody stools
      – persistent nausea and vomiting
      – skin that appears yellow (jaundice)
      – severe tenderness when you touch your abdomen
      – swelling of the abdomen

      In today’s COVID pandemic, it can be difficult to tell the difference between common ailments and COVID-19. Here’s an article from Emerson Hospital about how to tell the difference between allergies, cold, flu, and COVID-19

  21. Amber

    The first day of my last period was October 20th……. I had sexual intercourse on October 30th and also November 2nd . I am now 5 weeks pregnant. My ovulation WINDOW was Nov 1st – Nov 6th. Did I conceive on October 30th or November 2nd . I really need some help. Can anyone tell me what night of sexual intercourse I most likely conceived?????

    • Michael Wong

      According to Perinatology – “Because the human egg is capable of fertilization for only 12 to 24 hours after ovulation the date of ovulation may be taken as being the date of conception. However, ultrasound determination of the date of ovulation has the same imprecision as does the ultrasound estimate of the gestational age and, therefore, a precise date of conception cannot usually be determined as with in vitro fertilization. In addition, although a woman is most likely to become pregnant if she has sex on the day of ovulation conception may also occur from live sperm still in her reproductive tract on the day of ovulation if she had sex for up to five days before ovulation.”

    Hey I smashed my finger on my car door a few says ago, and now underneath about 50% of my nail is black. Am I going to lose my nail? Is there any way to prevent that?

    • Michael Wong

      According to this article from Healthline, “The fingernail on the smashed finger may also fall off within a week or two of the injury.” Please seek medical attention if your smashed finger causes extreme pain or involves more than just the fingertip. You should also seek medical help if “you can’t straighten your finger or involved more than just the fingertip. You should also seek medical help if:
      * the finger is noticeable bent or crooked
      * your finger feels numb immediately after the injury and before the use of ice
      * your fingernail bed, finger joints, knuckle, palm, or wrist are also injured
      * symptoms get worse after 24 to 48 hours of basic at-home care
      * deep wounds are present
      * you think the nail will fall off or a bruise takes up more than half of the nail
      bleeding or pus occurs at the site of the wound
      * you hear an odd noise like breaking or cracking at the time of the injury
      * the injury site stays extremely swollen for more than 48 hours”

    • Michael Wong

      Please use all medications as prescribed by your doctor. As this Cleveland Clinic article about erythromycin advises – “Throw away any unused ointment after the expiration date.”

  23. Maria k

    Hi I am a girl. Every time I touch myself and have an orgasm I bleed just a little. I am scared because some people online said I have to see a doctor but I can’t because I am young and too afraid to tell me mom. This the third time I bleed.

    • Michael Wong

      Please speak to your parents about your healthcare issues. This article from TeensHealth has tips on speaking with parents – “You probably talk to friends way more than you talk to your parents. That’s natural. Even if you and your parents have a great relationship, you want to find your own path and make your own choices. Still, most of us want a parent’s help, advice, and support at times. But talking to the adults in your life can seem difficult or intimidating — especially when it comes to certain subjects.”

    Hello-

    Was at a gas station today pumping gas and the pump started to leak from the top part. Gas went on my forehead causing a small chemical burn. Right eye is red and a bit blurry after rinsing. Throat also feels raw. I’m worried about seeking care at urgent care due to Covid being so bad where I am. Advice? Thank you

    • Michael Wong

      Gasoline exposure – “Gasoline is dangerous for your health because it’s toxic. Exposure to gasoline, either through physical contact or inhalation, can cause health problems. The effects of gasoline poisoning can harm every major organ. It’s important to practice and enforce safe gasoline handling to prevent poisoning … Swallowing gasoline or excessive exposure to fumes warrants a visit to the emergency room or a call to a local poison control center. In case of emergency:
      * Don’t force vomiting.
      * Don’t give the victim milk.
      * Don’t give liquids to an unconscious victim.
      * Don’t leave the victim and yourself exposed to gasoline fumes.
      * Don’t attempt to remedy the situation yourself. Always call for help first.

      If you suspect any exposure to the skin or if you think an excess amount has been inhaled, you should call the American Association of Poison Control Centers at 1-800-222-1222.”

  25. Ashita

    Hi, I’m of 22yrs. I have my periods on 13oct to 15th Oct then on 20th Oct I had 1 time unprotected intercourse. After that I have bleeding on 8th Nov to 11th Nov. Now this time in Dec I’m 7 days late and I’m feeling like bloated and upset stomach and rectal pain. I have done pregnancy test at home earlier this morning and it’s negative. I’m feeling mild cramps.

  26. I have chest pains well they are not pain it is uncomfortable and sometimes like a pinch I do have anxiety I have had this uncomfortableness for the beginning of this year but sometimes bothers me is it breast cancer or what my mom won’t take me to the doctors so I don’t know. I am 14 and I am healthy tho I don’t exercise I maintain I semi healthy diet I do worry a lot about everything.

    • Michael Wong

      Chest pain is “sometimes a symptom of anxiety. Often the result of a panic attack or heightened reaction, chest pain is a concern because of the possible connection to heart attacks and other heart conditions.”

      However, chest pain can “be a warning sign for a heart attack.” This chart may help differentiate anxiety chest pain vs. heart attack chest pain.

      • Yasmyn

        It is odd I have been getting them all year since covid which has made it worse. And it comes a lot and then leaves then comes back can a heart attack happen like that?

        • Michael Wong

          An anxiety attack and a heart attack “are often related, which can result in increased discomfort and fear. In fact, it may be unclear whether you’re having an anxiety attack or heart attack, so knowing the difference might save your life,” as this article from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center explains – “If you’re experiencing symptoms, call 911 immediately. While there are ways to determine the difference between a panic attack and a heart attack, a medical diagnosis is the only way to be sure. Pay special attention to an episode that includes:
          * Chest pain or pressure
          * Burning esophageal discomfort resembling indigestion
          * Shooting or aching pain that moves down the arm
          * Pain that travels into the jaw area
          * Discomfort between the shoulder blades
          * Vomiting”

  27. Latoya

    I have ptsd sometimes I am scared to go to sleep of mahbei light die BUT here so the thing I wake up sometimes feeling like woozy sometimes shaking one or twice.Am. I dying? I have discomfort. The dizziness. What could it be I am only 14

  28. anonymous

    I have this dark thing behind the uterus that seems to eject urine out of it, I’m embarrassed to go see a urologist and I do feel a bit of discomfort, should i be concerned?

    • Michael Wong

      An estimated 2 out of 3 women develop uterine prolapse, the symptoms for which include:
      * Pressure or heaviness in your pelvis or vagina.
      * Low backache.
      * Leaking urine or sudden urge to empty the bladder.
      * Repeated bladder infections.
      * Increased vaginal discharge.
      * Vaginal bleeding.
      * Uterus and cervix that bulge into the vaginal opening.
      * Problems with sexual intercourse.

      Although seeing a doctor may at first seem embarrassing, “The sooner you speak up, the sooner you’ll get help,” says ob-gyn Dr. Susan Hendrix.

  29. Amanda

    Hello,
    I’m new to this and google was not helping . anyways, if someone has a bump or a knot behind their ear what is it and what caused it and why did it happen . Also any preventative tips?

    • Michael Wong

      Causes of lumps behind the ears – “In most cases, lumps or nodules behind the ears are harmless. They may signal a need for medication, as in the case of an infection, but they rarely are a sign of a dangerous or life-threatening problem.”

  30. Claire

    I have a Nexplanon birth control implant, and have had it since the beginning of December. Lately I’ve been noticing some breast tenderness. Could I be pregnant or could it be period symptoms? I’m not getting my period at all right now but could I still get some symptoms without the bleeding?

  31. Kate

    I’m 19 years old, I’ve had trouble eating for about 2 years, worried about gaining weight but the past month it’s gotten a lot worse, I’ve been eating 0-200 calories if that daily, every time I do I have to force myself to eat. Checking the mirror about 10 times a day. I can’t really make myself eat lately just because I’m worried about gaining anything, is there any medication I could possibly take to make me want to eat? I’ve never went to the doctor about this but I probably should.

    • Michael Wong

      Please consult with your doctor to get a diagnosis and treatment for your condition, as it sounds as if you may be in need of medical attention.

    Hey I’m 15 and I found out last I have a heart murmur. And i get chest pain ever so often. And I am wondering what causing the chest pain and how I got a heart murmur.

    • Michael Wong

      A heart murmur is “a sound made by turbulent blood flow within the heart. Your doctor hears this sound with a stethoscope. A murmur can occur in a normal heart. Or it may indicate some problem within the heart … Call your doctor if you begin to experience:
      * Shortness of breath
      * Persistent light-headedness
      * Episodes of rapid or irregular heartbeat
      * Chest pain

      There are many causes of heart murmur including “defective valves, congenital heart disorders and anaemia.”

    • Michael Wong

      If you have “an innocent heart murmur, you can live a completely normal life. It will not cause you any problems and is not a sign of an issue with your heart.”

    • Michael Wong

      The crude mortality rate for persons with a heart murmur was 140.4 per 10000 person-years compared to a rate of 34.9 per 10000 person-years for persons without a murmur. An untreated heart murmur over time can damage the heart which can lead to serious health issues and death,” warns Dr. Neil Agrawal.

    Me and my partner had unprotected sex and the next day I peed blood also when I was urinating it was a painful pain like it burns when I pee. A couple days later I was concerned because now I can’t empty my bladder. I have to urinate frequently. My urinate has a smelly scent. I pee cloudy urinate now. I’ve been searching all through the internet and I’m not sure if it’s UTI. Please tell me if these are the symptoms i would like for you to tell me how to treat it at home!

    • Michael Wong

      Urinary tract infections, commonly referred to as UTIs, can be painful. The pain often presents as an ache or pressure in your lower abdomen. If the infection has spread to your kidneys, you may also feel pain in your lower back.

      According to Physicians Immediate Care, you should go to the ER or seek medical attention whenever you have a UTI along with any of the following:
      * Fever with severe and sudden shaking (Rigors)
      * Nausea, vomiting, and the inability to keep down clear fluids or medications
      * If you are pregnant
      * If you have diabetes or another condition that affects the immune system
      * If you are taking medications that suppress the immune system, such as cancer or chemotherapy

    Why do they administer omeprazole post-operative? Why is it necessary? The client underwent laparotomy. General anesthesia was administered. Ruptured appendix was removed, peritoneal fluid for C&S obtained and then washing with intermittent suctioning done. Two catheters were inserted and then connected to Hemovac and JP drain. Intraoperatively, NGT connected to BSB and IFC connected to urine bag were also inserted. Patient was extubated after suctioning and OPA was securely placed.

      Proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole “stop cells in the lining of the stomach from producing too much acid. This can help to prevent ulcers from forming, or assist the healing process where damage has already occurred. By decreasing the amount of acid, they can also help to reduce the symptoms of acid reflux disease, such as heartburn. Omeprazole is also given as one part of a treatment to get rid of Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium found in the stomach, which can cause ulcers.”

    I was out taking pictures in the snow earlier today and now my feet are red and swollen. Could it be frostbite or could they be swollen for another reason?

      Kidney stones are “hard collections of salt and minerals that form in your kidneys and can travel to other parts of your urinary system. Stones cause symptoms like pain, trouble urinating, cloudy or smelly urine, nausea and vomiting. Some stones will pass on their own. Others need treatment with sound waves or surgery to break them up or remove them.

      Call your doctor if you have any symptoms of kidney stones. Get medical help right away if you have these symptoms, which could indicate that you have an infection or other serious complication:
      * pain so severe that you can’t get comfortable
      * nausea, vomiting, fever, or chills with the pain
      * blood in your urine
      * trouble urinating

    I had the flu recently, I was taking 4 d3 125mg each per day and i was using the bathroom a lot. I was taking it hoping it would help my illness go away quicker. After all of the symptoms from the flu were gone, I have this sudden inhale that comes over me that feels like a hiccup suddenly but its not a hiccup. I had low iron but the dr said it wasnt that low right now. However, I dont know if i took too much d3 or due to the numerous amount of bathroom visits that I am lacking certain minerals I dont know. But i do not have insurance to visit the hospital and the nearest appt for primary care is APRIL can you please help me and tell me what this may be. The inhale happens some days every now and then , not all day but every now and then sounds like a hiccup

    I have been experiencing passing out mixed with a black out but i am standing up, then I loose my vision and get a headache and do stuff I do not know what I am doing, one time I was able to walk from room to room and open the fridge but then i regained conciseness and fell. I do not know what I do during when this happens , i get blurry parts of memory from it sometimes. But it concerns me because it could be something serious, and i could just be brushing it off. This happens 2-3 times a day and it lasts about 1-3 minutes. I have gotten injured from this 3 times within the last year and am really concerned because its just really odd.

    I have been having random headaches every day to every other day. When I take a nap to relieve a migraine, it comes back worse when I wake up.

    22 weeks pregnant with twins. Lower back pain. The past week I’ve been feeling gas pains in my stomach. Lots of burping sometimes I have to spit up my food. Pressure down low that sends me to the bathroom very often. My bladder is empty but I still have the feeling to go. Yesterday I threw up my dinner. And have had a headache for 2 days. Is this preterm labor?
