The theme for this year’s national nurses’ day could not be more appropriate given the current COVID-19 crisis “Nursing the World to Health.”

As the International Council of Nurses (ICN) wrote about this day:

The theme for 2020, Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Nursing the World to Health, demonstrates how nurses are central to addressing a wide range of health challenges. It will encourage nurses and the public to celebrate the big day, but also provide information and resources that will help to raise the profile of the profession throughout the year and attract a new generation into the nursing family.

When ICN made that announcement in October 2019, few people might have predicted how prescient that theme would be in 2020. As of May 6, 2020, according to Johns Hopkins University of Medicine, globally there are 3,691,683 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 258,256 deaths – in the United States, those numbers are 1,206,886 and 71,220 respectively.

Nurses are on the frontline fighting COVID-19. Moreover, nurses and other healthcare workers are conducting this fight in what the World Health Organization has described as “an alarming failure” in the global supply of protective clothing and new coronavirus tests.

The Physician-Patient Alliance for Health & Safety is extremely proud that nurses are leading the virtual chat line that we launched to support cardiovascular and particularly patients with atrial fibrillation (Afib). This effort is made possible by the generous grant support of BMS-Pfizer Alliance, as well as the efforts and resources of the American Heart Association, AC Forum, Heart Rhythm Society, StopAfib.org, Mended Hearts, and Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association.
