Health care professionals are dedicated to improve the well-being of their patients. That includes safety situations that they might encounter, or those that have already been encountered and may cause injury. To help doctors, nurses, and others better assess and accurately treat common injuries, the health care profession has created a code, the ICD-10, short for International Classification of Diseases, Revision 10. This is periodically updated; the latest revision was released on October 1, 2015.

There’s much seriousness to be had in the ICD-10—life-threatening conditions detailed in a series of numbers and characters. But there’s also surprise, too, that gives insight into the complexity that doctors, nurses, and others might encounter—either once in a career or on a more frequent basis. To highlight that, this infographic pulls out some of the more unique assessments and their codes, for an unusual look into life in hospitals and clinics across the country.
